Winter Preparedness Tips
December 2009 - Winter is in full swing, which means a drop in temperature and frozen precipitation. Some of the perils of winter weather include frozen pipes, iced over gutters and fires. So, what necessary precautions should you take to avoid or alleviate these dangers?
If you have interior piping that is in a colder environment insulating your pipes may help. Naturally, if the pipes are in a wall cavity insulation is not accessible. Temporary heating may be an answer. Placing an electric portable heater in close proximity to the pipes may be enough to keep them from freezing. Targeting a hair dryer near the pipes for short periods may help. However, with portable heating comes the danger of fire if left unattended. Please remember to never try to thaw frozen pipes with a torch. If you plan on leaving the property for an extended period, it is recommended that you speak with a plumber about winterizing your home.
It is important to remember that along with the colder weather comes warm fireplaces, portable heaters and holiday candles; all sources of potential fires. Please ensure that your chimney flue is free from debris and ready for a season of burning. Watch for sparks from the fire landing on carpet or other flammable materials. Keep an eye on portable heaters and always be extra cautious with candles. A large majority of fires are started as a result of unattended candles.
As for the exterior, keep an eye out for any potential problems. While it is not advisable to knock icicles from gutters, you may want to keep areas below them free of traffic or objects that could be damaged.
